I started reading my Rome notes today. Not sure if today's studying was productive. Did manage to finish reading it, as well as one chapter of my textbook, but I suppose I could have done better. Don't seem to have much time left for detailed analysis nor start on my driving theory.
Anyway, while reading through on Rome's ideals and religious system, the stark similarity between Rome and China surfaced even more strongly. Rome fuctioned by many ideals, such as piety, honour, courage and justice. I find this quite similar to how the Chinese regard filial piety, loyalty to the country etc as important values, and that people who upheld these ideals had mythic/historical stories told about them from generation to generation. The Romans also had a religion similar to that of the Chinese. Both societies have gods or deities that existed for different functions. For example, the Romans have Jupiter as head of the gods, while the Chinese have Yu Huang Da Di (Jade Emperor). They have Janus, the god of doors, while we have Men Shen (Door Gods). They have Tellus, the earth god, while we have Tu Di Gong. It's interesting to note that two great dynasties have arisen in such different parts of the world totally separate from each other, but in such a similar fashion. I suppose that these two societies, by trial and error, have learnt the best way not just to survive, but also to thrive.
America and its uprising have been compared to the founding of ancient Rome. Both forms of governance are Republic; both have senates and consul(s). Even America's architecture, like those of the Parliament and White House, were modelled and built after Rome's forums. In addition, both are just as decadent.
The next interesting to note is that America doesn't seem to get along very well with China. They both have similarities with Rome, but in different aspects. So... if they merge, will the world be a huge renactment of Rome's history? Perhaps this is also the logic of 'no two tigers in one mountain' in practice.
It's a pity these bits of thoughts won't come in useful during my exams. After studying, I went out for dinner at Papa Gino's. Had Fredo's and then they went to my place to chill out. Pics courtesy of Su San.
Jansen's sister Jenying (pardon me if the spelling's wrong) and friend Gideon were in Melbourne and so they joined us for dinner and Fredo's too (far right, at Fredo's).

This picture was taken at a CSS 2006 Trivarsity Retreat at The Church of St. Teresa, by a fellow retreat cum CSS member.
Besides its bluish hue, I love how the shot was taken: from the church looking out to the city. We are often attracted by
the excitement that this world has to offer, but we should often be reminded that as Catholics, it is important
to look back at our selves to reflect, and to turn to God as often as it possible. For we are, afterall, children of God.
I thought of replacing this picture when I lost my template, but I could not find another so full of meaning and beauty to me.
It reminds me of my identities and roles - my spirituality, my God, my home, the people who read this blog, and of my own beauty.

song in her head: wants to give you up. she knows you're not the one. not the one who understands her. not the one who wants to support her and love her for all her imperfections.
