On wed night we celebrated Jason's 23rd bday at this chinese restaurant along Chinatown. Yanfen and I met up first at the public baths, so we could walk down together. When we reached the junction where we were supposed to meet the rest, we looked round and started commenting on the restaurants. Then we saw this restaurant called Ants Bistro or Hong Ma Yi, which means Red Ants in chinese, and started wondering aloud who will dare eat there and we should set up a restaurant called Spiders and all sorts of other jokes. The rest were late, so I gave nelson a call and asked him which restaurant, if anyone was there and if we could go in first. And he told me to look for a place called Ants Bistro. Wah both of us just stunned, and started laughing after that. Turns out the food there is really nice, there were no ants, and the price was reasonable. We filled up about three full tables and more, so we had the whole of upstairs and it was quite cosy. We left about 9pm after dinner.
Supposedly. Yes, all of us gave him a surprise that day. The plan was to let him know that we were 'celebrating' for him during dinner, but little did he know that we were to appear in his house and give him a surprise birthday cake. So after the dinner, all of us left gradually and separated around town, either back to their homes or to others'. I went with yanfen to her house to drop some of her stuff, and to get a look at her place. It's a studio apartment like mine, but it's slightly cheaper. I think it's more worth it than mine, but it does get a bit too dark at night. Hey my place is dark, but the Italian restaurants are behind, and Draculas is in front. It's not that dark.
After that we met up with nelson, ian and thai in nelson's place to watch them practise, and then we went to eat some cake at Brunetti's. Brunetti's is a big famous cake shop along Lygon that has splendid cakes, pastries, macaroons, tart, sandwiches and all the yummies you could think of. Well, it was expensive, but sharing helps to reduce the cost. And it's my first time there. We ordered a sticky date and almond pudding, a winter pudding, a tart with a whole caramelised pear in it, a small chocolate bite-sized thingy, and a kind of flatbread with cheese and rum in it. The winter pudding was just simply delightful, as well as the pear tart. The flatbread doesn't tast like any typical dessert. Just imagine the sort of tastes you would get if you ate cheese and bread and sipped some rum. It's in between a dessert and a savoury I suppose. New experiences.
We headed to nelson's place after that, to gather everyone and to prepare the cake. Ian and jason's place is a few floors above nelson's, so about 20 of us took the lifts up as quietly as we could, lit the candles, and entered their house. Now jason was in his room, and ian's plan was to get him out into the living room unsuspecting, but he was on the phone with his gf, who was in our plan to distract him while we crept into his house. Anyhow, we had to barge into his room, give him a shock, almost had the cake toppled, and left him not just pleasantly surprised but rather shocked as well. We almost thought that with all our racket we made outside, he would have heard us. Apparantly he did not, so i suppose the 'distraction' worked. We had the cake (more cake!) and ian and nelson serenaded jason with his favourite song. So sweet. So gay lah. Even though jason did look a bit embarassed, I'm sure it's the thought that counts.
On friday, we had icebreakers and we broke the news about sister theresa, our chaplain, leaving us for her sabbatical, which is a one year haitus, involving discernment and courses etc. This means that we will have a new international student chaplain and a new spiritual director, and for cosdu, it's quite a big change, as any religious group dependent on their spiritual director will be. The games were quite fun. Tested our team bonding skills. Haha. One of the games was the protect-the-egg-from-a-drop game, with the given paper and straw and masking tape. Our team wanted a challenge, so we covered the egg only with the straws. Well, it survived the drop, but didn't quite survive the smash.
Went to mass with yanfen on sunday. She's starting her rcia programme and sister told her to go for mass with a friend, so here I am. We went to Shark Fin Inn for lunch, and she found eight other people waiting there to celebrate her 21st bday for her. Yep, another surprise. Her bday's next sunday actually, but she'll be going on a ski trip then, so we pushed it one week earlier, which was why she probably didn't suspect anything until she saw them. Shark Fin Inn sounds expensive, but it only sounds. It serves hongkong tim sum which is very good, and sharing again cuts costs. Then the manager came up to us and asked us when we want the cake to be served. It was supposed to be the next surprise...you can just imagine our reactions... After the tim sum was done, we served the cake. It's a chocolate mousse and custard cake from Brunetti's, which the others found sweet but I felt it was just nice. The cream is really good. I don't usually like the cream on cakes because it's just sweet and plasticky, but this one is really fragrant.
We went home and met up again at jansen's place for dinner, which was salad, courtesy of fax. I never had just salad for dinner before. It was filling though, tasty and healthy. Good change.
A new week has started.

This picture was taken at a CSS 2006 Trivarsity Retreat at The Church of St. Teresa, by a fellow retreat cum CSS member.
Besides its bluish hue, I love how the shot was taken: from the church looking out to the city. We are often attracted by
the excitement that this world has to offer, but we should often be reminded that as Catholics, it is important
to look back at our selves to reflect, and to turn to God as often as it possible. For we are, afterall, children of God.
I thought of replacing this picture when I lost my template, but I could not find another so full of meaning and beauty to me.
It reminds me of my identities and roles - my spirituality, my God, my home, the people who read this blog, and of my own beauty.

song in her head: wants to give you up. she knows you're not the one. not the one who understands her. not the one who wants to support her and love her for all her imperfections.
